Does the contractor want the employees to be certified to "shoot" the studs with a stud gun or to weld them on with SMAW or FCAW?

He wants them to weld them with FCAW.

They are working with Wall studs. I am going to go and look to see if we have the code book here for me to look at.

Look at Chapter 7 in D1.1. It would be much easier, quicker (and cheaper) for the contractor to rent (or buy) a stud gun and shoot them on. Maybe you could suggest that to them?

The customer is requiring them to screw the studs as well as weld them. The Carpenters are doing more and more of this type of work. The customer (Eli Lilly) wants to see some paper work that says that the welders are Qualified to do the work. It is becoming my job to make it happen.

Amazing...

This person is talking about light gage sheet steel studs. Has nothing to do with shear studs used for composite construction.

Crabb, use the AWS D1.3-98 Strcutural Welding Code-Sheet Steel for qualification of your welders and procedures.

Amazing.

Call your UBC Brothers at the JATC in a jurisdiction where they commonly qualify welders on light gage. Whittier California comes to mind. They weld a ton of metal studs in So California and run dedicated classes in that field. I'm sure they would be willing to help you out.

I'm back again. I just got D1.3-98 in the mail today and am still a little confused? Will the galv on the studs make any difference? I am very new to looking at the codes so you will have to forgive me. I dont yet have my CWI, I will be taking the test in October, so maybe that will help me with understanding everything.

Will the studs that I am refering to, be considered to be just sheet steel, or are they something different?

Yes, the coating makes a difference in the testing of the welders, they need to be tested on the same materials(w/coatings) that they will encounter on the job.

See Table 4.3 (11) for PQR essential variables...

...and paragraph 4.7.1.1 for performance essential variables regarding the coatings.
