I would like some opinions on the ICC Structural Steel and Welding Special Inspector. Is it worth having or is it a waste. I am curious because I could more or less take the test for free.Only problem is I would have to buy the books I need for the test.

QCCWI,
I guess it all depends on which codes you work with. There doesn't seem to be a great call for it on the EAST COAST, but there seems to be a lot of personnel on the WEST COAST. It really depends if the EIC goes with the IBC codes for special inspection personnel, and then it can get to be really muddy as to who does what. Just a thought, have you seen the AISC new steel inspector criteria? I would think this may be a new requirement for shop personnel in the near furture.

Yeah I have seen the AISC steel inspector criteria that is kind of why I was asking. I have been told that my GI bill from when I was in the Army will pay for the ICC Structural Steel and Welding Special Inspector test whether I pass it or not. I was think about taking the test just to see if I might learn something.

The Specification for the Qualification of Steel Structures Inspectors will be initiated by the AISC in the near future. Code regulations such as IBC are forcing us to better demonstrate our committment to training and continuous education of our staff. The AISC is responding to the requirement of IBC that "special inspectors" be certified by examination of the ICC Structural Steel and Welding Inspector test. Compliance to IBC as a "certified fabricator" is a position we have been marketing to avoid constant third party inspection in our shops. We use skills tests for our shop inspectors, but we plan to modify them in order to prepare our staff for the new exam.

So if I take the ICC Structural Steel and Welding Inspector test, AISc would be happy with that or is AISC going to reinvent the wheel by making their own test. I don't see any reason to get a certification that will not do me any good.

I, too, have been looking at the ICC certification, but since I saw the AISC certification in its infancy, and since there is a requirement for the AISC certification to be an (S)CWI, I think the AISC certification will be more stringent than the ICC certification. As said above, the ICC is bigger on the West Coast than here on the East Coast. I plan to be near the head of the line for the AISC certification.

Obviously, since the document ( http://www.aisc.org/template.cfm?template=/PressRelease/PressReleaseDisplay.cfm&PressReleaseID=50178 ) has only been out for review for just over a month, the program is still in its infancy. I would not be surprised to see it take a year to go through review, possible editing with suggestions, possible re-review, and then adoption and implementation. Until then, I will make sure I become knowledgeable on all the apparent subjects addressed in the preview copy. My company is backing my intention to become certified.
