can i use pure argon with mild steel mig welding ? i know that ideally i should use argoshield but i have been given a full free bottle , and need to understand if the welds will be affected ? in apperance the runs look a lot greyer in colour , with no signs of porosity or spatter , i am just concerened what may happen to the strength .

Cheers

Very high arc voltage, zero penetration and a very bad bead shape are your only problems. Strength of the weld you deposit is unaffected. It is very difficult to obtain a short-arc or dip-transfer with pure argon. Save the tank for an aluminum job.

Or save it for purging stainless steel or shielding for SS TIG.
