I have a small welding operation in which I do a lot of repairs on excavating equipment. I have been using SMAW for many years
and I am looking to buy a suitcase feeder and switch to FCAW.
My problem is I can't afford trials with all the wires available.
Does anyone have any opinions they would like to share with wires
that seem to work for them? Most of my repairs are blades, buckets, tracks, etc. on dozers, excavators, loaders, etc.

More information is needed to provide a good recommendation. Do you need to do any of this work out of position or is it all flat/horizontal? What shielding gas do you have access to? What is the wear type (e.g. metal-to-metal, metal to earth, etc)? Is your suitcase limited to 10 lb spools?

You can find the Stoody area representative for your region at:

Contact him and you will be pleasantly surprised at the assistance you will receive.

Have you looked into purchasing a copy of the AWS Specification for Welding Earthmoving and Construction Equipment D14.3? This guide provides the standards needed to produce the structural welds used in the manufacture of crawlers, tractors, loaders, power shovels, backhoes and other self-propelled machinery, and places a heavy emphasis on workmanship and welder qualification. In addition, the specification also provides illustrations of prequalified welded joints for a variety of welding procedures.

If you truly need all position capability (specifically, vertical and overhead), then look at Stoody 965AP-G

http://www.thermadyne.com/stoody/literature/pdfs/Crcw002.pdf

but if you can get by with welding flat and horizontal, then you could use 121-G or 101HC-G:

http://www.thermadyne.com/stoody/literature/pdfs/Crcw009.pdf

All are tried and true products.

For what is is worth I've used the McKay Tube-Alloy 255 gas shielded flux cored wire in the past with good results (.045 dia.). Expect it to cross check crack though. Below is a link to the 255 brochure and links to other self shielded and gas shielded McKay hard surface wires.
