Does anybody know what the welding characteristics of welding 5086 aluminum are like? 90% of my aluminum welding has to do with 6 and 4 series aluminum. The 5086 will be tubing. I'm going over some plans for a project with a mechanical engineer and he says that for the project we will be doing, 5086 won't eventually break from stress like the 6 series will, at least for this project. He knows what he is talking about, we have never had ANY engineering problems related to design and material choice. I told him that some series of aluminum, from what I've been told, can be more difficult to weld than others. So, how easy is 5086, say compared to 6061 for instance? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

5086 is very easy to weld, MIG or TIG, and you will retain 90% of your base material strength in the HAZ. Filler metals 5183,5356 or 5556.
Enjoy!
