Does anyone have any advice or tricks for running a root pass on sch.80 pipe with 7018 or 7016, such as rod angle, gap or landing size or a special technique?

I have found using Miller Syncrowave with an adjustable ac dig control works excellent. Set the machine for ac stick welding and the dig control for maximum and leave it alone. Set the amperage control for the penetration and travel speed with open root 3/32-1/8 inch and a root face about 3/32. Side to side wiggle and no whipping (leave that for S&M). Hot, fill & cover passes, switch machine to DCEP and if you use the Syncrowave, set the dig control to no more than 60%. Or better yet use a three phase machine. If you don't have ac with dig control, use DCEN for the root and H F C passes with DCEP. Short tight arc length.
