AWS D1.1:2004 has all of the critical dimensions see Figure 4.15 for a guided bend test jig.

Here is one we built several years ago using a 12Ton bottle jack...

Hi John,

How logical to push down! I've seen too many with the same type of frame, but the rollers are on the top and the jack pushes the plunger up. The specimens are retrieved through a slot in the top. A safety cage (or pin) is usually not added until one snaps and launches across the shop.

We made this thing up in a rush to get things going, because we had many welders to test at that time. If I had to do over there would be a few slight changes, but it works and I can't seem to find the time to do it over right now, so it is still in service. I bent several side bends today. I took a look at some factory built units and every one I saw ejected out the top. Mine simply falls out the bottom and I pick it up and look at it, no excitement, unless I saw the specimen a smigit over 3/8" thick and then I have to get out a hammer to get the sample to turn loose of the plunger, no biggie. Anyway, for a few bucks for the jack at Big Lots(less than $10) we built it out of scrap material.

Have you all seen the one that Fischer makes that is pneumatic?

Sweet and ejects out the bottom. adjustable too!
