Hi Josh!

1. "New Lessons in Arc Welding", "Arc Welding for Beginners" James F. Lincoln Foundation
c/o Lincoln Electric... Price: $10.00 USD if your budget is tight!
In fact, you will find a choice of welding textbooks for beginners when you visit the Lincoln Electric education department website
Check out this link: https://ssl.lincolnelectric.com/lincoln/apdirect/store.asp?cat=6

2. "Welding Skills" (I have the second edition 1997) by R.T. Miller, published by ATP (American Technical Publishers). Price: NA.
ISBN#:0-8269-3007-7

3. "Modern Welding" by Althouse, Turnquist, Bowditch & Bowditch.
Published by Goodheart-Willcox Company Inc. Price: NA
ISBN#: 1-56637-605-X. In fact, check out their website because they have more than one book on welding technology.

4. "Modern Welding Technology" (I have the fourth edition)
written by the late Howard B. Cary, Published by Prentice Hall.
ISBN#: 0-13-241803-7. Price: NA.

5. "Welding Principles and Applications" Written by Larry Jeffus.
Published by Delmar Publishers. http://www.delmar.com/delmar
ISBN#: 0-8273-8240-5

Obviously, there are some other "Good" books published and you'll probably get more suggestions but, this is what I have readily available to recommend so, happy hunting!!!

Respectfully,

Josh,

Bill gave you an excellent one, and I have a couple good ones I'll send you if you post your email address. The best part is that they're all free.

I have the Welding Skills book and Welding Principals book. The Welding Principals book is my favorite of the 2. They are currently in the 5th edition mine is a 4th edition, and most of the information is current enough to be valuable. On ebay I have seen them go for around $35 new around $140

The Welding Principals book is really helpful. Lots of information and not over written.

Take a look at the general welding books and other training materials posted at http://www.welding.org/cart/training/gwbooks.htm

There are several good choices. The one I most often recommend in response to this question is Modern Welding Technology by Howard Cary and Scott Helzer. 6th edition.

Order by calling 1-800-332-9448, ext. 5433.

Does the Cary book get into the physics details of WHY it is that various gases or currents have different effects on the weld beads?

If you are a beginner, i do suggest that you find a training centre with a good instructor where you can meet with students and discuss activities regarding welding. It will not be easy for you to do this on your own. You may get by with doing backyard welding, but professionally, you will need the expertise of experienced instructors. Welding is not difficult, but mastering techniques that will make you an excellent welder takes time and learning from others.
Good Luck!
