I just received a 250 size oxygen bottle that appears to have been made way back in 10/1918! Anyone know when such cylinders were first made?

The oldest I've seen was a 1918 as well.
They are taken out of service after 99 years I believe, even if they still hydro.
That old girl has been around the block a few times! Theoretically could have been used in both the Wright Bros. shop and in a NASA shop during it's lifetime.

Back in the early 1960's I worked in the metallurgy lab. of a place that made cylinders, among many other items. They were seamless deep-drawn 4130, quenched, and tempered at 1000F.

For proof of a big lot of them they fired a .50 cal. machine gun bullet at one that was pressurized with air (don't recall the PSI). They used a series of plywood baffles set at an angle to turn the bullet sideways before it hit the cyl. No shrapnel was allowed-cyl. had to stay in one piece.

From 1918 to 2005 87 years have passed.
Curious question: will a cylinder made in 2005 be still in service in 2092?

There really isnt much that can go wrong with cylinder besides actual damage caused by user, being dropped, ect.

The 1918 bottle I had was covered with stamps, you could follow them all the way to the current test date. I thought about keeping it just for fun but emptied it and swapped it out.
