It's a wide range depending on your NDT background. In New England a CWI that is also Level II -UT, you can get $20 to $30 per hour.

At the present time, the State of California requires prevailing wage for a CWI @ $38.56 per hour for any public works projects. This includes DSA, OSHPD, DOT/Caltrans, etc.

South East Asia you can get USD300/day

Yea and they'll try to bend that around so it looks like you're getting per diem and mileage, so be carefull.

You can always gauge a company's integrity by the honesty of their pay scale.

Houston Texas will pay between $14 to $30 + mileage and per diem, depending on th honesty and integrity of the company you're working for.

Houston Tx. about 2 or 3 less than a welder unless you know somebody or can speak Spanish pretty good.

In other words somewhere between 14 & 18 / hr is all most are getting especially if they're not Hispanic.

The contractors will pay 20 to 25 but you have no bennifits, holidays, or insurance and if you work overtime you only get paid straight time for it.

So the more overtime you work the less money you'll make. I've had jobs where I worked so much overtime that I was actually taking home less than the Mexican helpers.

On top of that, they want you to supply a computer, digital camera and all that goes with it.

Yea, I would say this area is well Mexicanized. The only thing they haven't done is run up their flag and claim it.

MEXICANIZED?? Brother it's becoming a reality that in any profession speaking spanish is an advantage not just welding inspection. I work with surveyors/inspectors every day who speak spanish and are not meixcan. They have realized how important speaking spanish is in todays market. My response to you sir, your response on this forum has shown me your unprofessionalism and lack of qualifications to be an inspector in todays society. so stop being a cry baby and smell the coffee.... learn spanish and maybe you'll earn more than the "Mexican helpers". I'm a CWI with level II in UT, MT, PT, RTFI, NACE I...... and yes a proud American from Mexican decent. I promise you it takes experience and qualifications to be successful in todays economy and complaining (crybaby) hasn't helped anyone's career to my knowledge. God Bless America!!

Sounds like your a little on the offensive there FWAV. I think you missed the inside point that Tejas_Insp was talking about. I would have to agree with him about being mexicanized. Nothing against mexicans. But US companies and contractors are all about this practice now. Bringing in aliens and people from other contries that will work for sub minimum wage. I know particularly this practice thrives in the south: Texas, LA,MS,AL....they hire mexicans and carrabean people on short contracts and get rid of them, then bring in the next batch. A good example is the casinos in the gulf coast area. They hire Jamacans on 6 month contracts to do jobs paying them sub par money and cramming a bunch of them into an appartement...then ship them out in 6 months. No union, poor pay,no benefits, no job security. And if they dont like they way one looks one day, they can fire them on the spot. Ya, you could call it "modern day slavery" And, i think the true blue collar workers of the USA must put a stop to this.

Sometimes I get paid $10 per hour and sometimes I get paid $100 per hour. It depends who the client is and what the project is.

The average would be $20 - $30 p2p + mileage.

$35.00 per hour my rate, port to port, here in NE PA. I do not charge any per diem or mileage whithin a 50 mile radius of my office. After that it is .55/mile and $25.00 per diem plus hotel expenses, if needed. All of my clients are pleased with this arrangement.

Does your rate of $35 include just CWI or do you hold any NDT certs?
Parent - - By fbrieden (***) Date 03-20-2002 19:58
Pat,
Level II MT and PT

Pay for a CWI depends on experience and the job requirments. I personal feel $20 per hour plus expense is minimum pay. I have 19 years experience in the trade and have worked from $20 to $40/hour plus OT (pay and 1/2) and expenses.

It’s been very enlightening the past few years since I retired from my lifetime career company. You quickly learn who is hiring the stamp and who’s hiring the experience, more often then not by the rate offered or accepted. In my personal situation, I only accept part-time work, which by its nature (low man-hours worked during the three year period) disallows re-certification. Interestingly, about the same number of prospective employers want a current certification at a lower pay rate as compared to those paying a higher rate for experience, regardless if your certs are current or not!
