Does anybody know why E7016 electrodes are commonly used in European countries, while E7018 electrodes are most commonly utilized in North America. Why aren't E7016 electrodes used in North America, and preferred in other parts of the world?

The XX16 with no iron powder provides the ability to weld open root 16 (low hydrogen). With 50 hertz transformer/rectifiers producing a soft/non digging AC/DC arc. The US uses 10's for the root pass. Then "burns" it out with 18.

can you still do a good open root with 16 on 60 hz?
Thanks

60hz has a more digging arc but it can be done. The best AC machines for the open root are the Miller Syncrowave 250/350 with the arc control at maximum and the amperage set for weld pool control.

pretty sure that suffix -15 is DC only
-16 is made to run with AC/DC.

you find the same designation with stainless steel stick rods
