Dear Friends,
HOw many times can we rebake E7018?
Is there any code or reliable reference like AWS about this subject?
i've read rebaking more than 1 time is forbidden, but somebody says we may rebake low-hydrogen electrode up to 3 times. which one is correct?
Thank you in advance

AWS D1.1 2004 states: "5.3.2.1 ....... Electrodes shall be rebaked no more than once. ....."

Hi,

According to AWS section 5.3.2.1 , it states that all electrodes having low hydrogen covering shall be rebacked no more than once.

Hoe this will be usefull.

If a basic electrode has been rebaked for a long time and you fall it down from 1 meter hight on a stiff ground, you will see that its covering will break apart easily.

What we are talking about is moisture content of the flux coating. E-7018 rods are classified as low-hydrogen because the flux coating should not get moist. Wet rods are to be discarded. E-7018 rods can be re-baked (if not wet) once. Low-hydrogen rods can be reconditioned several times per AWS D1.1.
Best regards,
VONASH

Where does it say in aws d1.1 that it may be reconditioned several times and how would this be differnt then being rebaked? \

Texredneck,
Most electrode manufacturers have a recommendation as to the required baking temperature for low hydrogen electrodes once you have opened the electrode box.
We bake newly opened electrodes at 300 degrees celcius for 1 hour minimum and then they are transferred to a holding oven of 100 degrees celcius.
I do not have AWS D1.1 at home with me but most codes/specifications have some sort of reference as to how long a low hydrogen electrode may be out of an oven/hotbox before it has to be returned or in some cases discarded.
As Vonash has said,if you take a handful of rods out of the oven for use on the job and you are not in an environment exposed to moisture (workshop etc) then when you put them back in the holding oven they are "reconditioned" and not "rebaked"
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Shane

The only place in AWS D.1.1 you will find the word reconditioning is under 8.4 "Fatique Life Enhancement".
It does not address reconditioning of electrodes. Only that they may be "Rebaked" once.
