The project we are on has A992 structural steel along with A36 plate, angle, etc. I have a prequalified, unlimited thickness D1.1 wps for A36 P1 to P1. I also have a qualified ASME Section IX procedure for P1 Group 1 to P1 Group 1. The Section XI procedure was qualified using A36 plate and E7018 rod. My question is this: Is our ASME wps acceptable for welding A992? My version of Welding Pro-Write states A992 as a P1 material, but I can't find the P number in any code book. Also, Under D1.1, does a column base plate welded with 100% penetration and 150 deg. preheat need to be UT or RT? I can't find any info on this as well.

Any help would be appreciated

Refering to QW-422 in Section IX:

A992 is an S1, Gr 1 material. If you have a PQR qualified with P1 material and notch toughness is not a factor, you may use the procedure for welding on the A992 material (within the established limits).

AWS D1.1 does not use P grouping terminology. Since A992 is not prequalified in D1.1, you would not be able to use the prequalified WPS for this application.

I don't know the answer to your question about UT.

Charles,
AWS D1.1:2006 has ASTM A992 listed in Table 3.1 Group II as a prequalified base material(it was added in AWS D1.1:2000).
As far as UT or RT requirements...that would be up to the customer's specs as to whether or not it is required.

edit: as far as the preheat, if using AWS D1.1 Table 3.2, it goes by the thickness to decide the preheat/interpass requirements.

Apologies. I obviously missed that on my first pass. It pays to go slow, which I plainly did not do. I appreciate the correction.

Charles,
It was kinda funny, because after I read your reply, I was in a terrible panic to get my 2006 D1.1 off the shelf to see if something had changed. That material is used in about 95% of everything we do here and I couldn't turn the pages quick enough to get to Table 3.1...LOL.

Actually, D1.1 - 3.3 refers to Table 3.1 for prequalified base metals and A992 is listed in Table 3.1 Group II. That means it can be used in a D1.1 prequalified WPS.

FYI- A992 is the same as A572 grade 50 modified to AISC Techincal Bulletin #3. The modification is mostly a limitation on the yield, tensile ration. For all intents and purposes, A992 adn A572-50 are the same thing. At present A992 doesn't apply to plates, just structural shapes but I have heard that might change.

I know- more info than was asked....

Chet
