The operators are having a serious problem with slag inclusions, small area's of underfill, and very eratic cover passes. When I confronted them about possible reasons for the bad welds they say it is because of running one electrode DC and the other electrode AC. I have no experience with multiple electrode SAW so my question is " Is it common practice to run one electrode AC and the other DC?

Yes, this is one of several common variations to the multiple-wire SAW process. Generally, if both arcs were DC and the currents were high, then magnetic arc-blow becomes a problem.

Ususally for a tandem-arc set-up the lead electrode is DCEP and the trail electrode is AC.
