AWS D17.1 para.4.2.3 Qualification/Certification Validity
In accordance with para. 4.2.3.1, A welder has two years validity when he got qualification.
And, para. 4.2.3.2 Extended Validity. Qualification of a process
may be extended indefinitely provided an auditable
record is maintained from the date of the initial qualification
that verifies that the welder/welding operator has
used the process within a six month period to weld applications
normally welded by the certified individual.

What kind of auditable record should be kept?
A log book?
Any example?

I think what you are refering to would most commonly be called a "welder continuity log". It is a simple form that lists the welder's name, stencil, WPS qualified with, initial qualification date, and then columns for 6 month re-cert dates.

here is somewhat of an example minus the actual colums and rows that would be visible on the form.

WELDER CONTINUITY LOG

NAME STENCIL WPS DATE 6 MO RE-CERT
john doe j (wps #) 01-01-00 06-01-00 /01-01-01

edit:well that doesn't actually come out looking like it supposed to when posted, but you get the idea.

Dragging up an old post while looking for an answer. Initial qualification is valid for 2 years.

The question is does the 6mos start at the end of the 2 years and extend it for an additional 2 years?

Mwccwi
It says
may be extended indefinitely provided an auditable
record is maintained from the date of the initial qualification.

record starts with the qualification and every 6 months that weldor welds the process qualified in an entry needs to be put in to the continuity log to enable indefinite qualification by auditable .
Does this help Martin

Good Luck
