Up Topic Welding Industry / Inspection & Qualification / weld continuity log question

it is my understanding that a welder need only perform the process such as gmaw or fcaw, ect,,to stay qualified not every different wps the shop has. is this correct?

Edited for clarification.......
I'm in agreement with jon, I re-read 4.1.3.1 and it mentions only engaging in the processes qualified within 6 months to remain in effect. I think I was confusing it with tack welders, because 4.1.3.2 mentions processes and positions.

Okie, the continuity applies to process only as far as I know. No need to maintain continuity for each WPS the welder may be qualified to use, just the process.

jon,
I agree, I was confused in my old age. I shouldn't rely on memory these days;)

Thought it was process and position.

Are we saying ONLY process (and nothing else) needs to be verified for continuity?
Parent - - By jon20013 (*****) Date 04-06-2006 20:11
ONLY the PROCESS. NOTHING ELSE needs be verified, once each six months or annually, depending on the Code. Not position, alloy, WPS or any of the other controlling parameters... just the process.

Sounds funny doesn't it? Welders only need to prove process has been used; yet tack welders have to prove process and position.(see 4.1.3.2)

Yeah, it is a bit odd. I don't know what the intent was when committee did that.

If a welder has several valid certs (e.g. SS; CS; Titanium; Inconel in GTAW) then that welder has to perform only one test in GTAW (within the 6 month period) and that will renew his qualifications for the GTAW process only.
ASME Code, Section IX.

QW-290.6 In Process Repair Welding
(4) continuity of qualification in accordance with QW-322 shall be based on following the WPS that was demonstrated in addition to using the process as required by QW-322.

QW-322.2 Renewal of Qualification
(a) Renewal of Qualification expired under QW-322.1(a) may be made for any process by welding a single test coupon of either plate or pipe, of any material, thickness or diameter, in any position, and by testing of that coupon as required by QW-301 and QW-302. A successful test
renews the welder or welding operator’s previous qualifications for that process for those materials, thicknesses, diameters, positions, and other variables for which he was previously qualified.

It's called PROCESS which is specific. Working with SMAW does not provide the experience requirements for renewal in any other process.

That's what i said in the first paragraph (GTAW process only).
