Testing of welds by AWS procedure

I understand that testing of welds at times is done by AWS procedure. I would be grateful if someone could provide me short information on - for which particular application or particular job is AWS procedure most important/compulsory for weld inspection?

AWS is applicable for structural welds.

Commonly, AWS D 1.1 would be used for general structural work associated with ASME VIII and ANSI 31.3

The testing associated with structures as related to NDE shall be documented in the original purchase agreement/contract, as no major NDE is required unless specified, other than visual. This is somewhat of a weakness of the system however if NDE is required the procedures utilized are required to meet AWS D1.1.
