During calibration of MPI yoke a 25mm plate of 18.1 kg was easily lifted by the yoke. But a 5mm plate of the same weight cannot be lifted by the same yoke...Why?

The 5mm plate must obviously be much larger in area than the 25mm plate. Perhaps you are not picking the plate up at the center and it is "peeling off" when you try to lift.

Shouldn't he be using a 6mm(1/4" PL 12" x 1'-0 or 10lbs)? for calibrating the A/C yoke?

I have a 1"(25mm) PL 12" x 1'-0 or 40lbs for calibrating the DC yoke and a 1/4" PL 12" x 1'-0 or 10lbs for calibrating the A/C yoke.

In purely unscientific terms ('cause I can't think of how else to say it) the 5mm plate has less mass in the magnetic field region to act upon than the 25mm plate does. The attraction forces can't develop enough strength to lift the thinner plate even though the weights are the same.

Chet you might be onto something, we double up plates when we are using the mag drill on thin materials. The magnet on the drill will not hold the drill on the thin material without adding a doubler underneath.

I think I mis-understood the original question so please disregard my first reply.

I agree with Chet.

thqci hit the nail on the head. The sizes shouldn't have any real effect on the lifting power of a yoke. The block was obviously unbalanced and peeled off. If your legs are not in direct contact with a block it will be difficult to lift it.
I ahve tried to life several sizes and shapes of blocks and found this to be true.
