I have a question in regards to welder qualification to the D1.1

If a welder is qualified in the 6G position in accordance with D1.1 is he only qualified to weld on the base metals defined by Table 3.1 and 4.9?

Para. 3.3 pertains only to pre-qualified WPS's.
Para. 4.1.1.2 allows for SWRP's use to the D1.1 code.
Para. 4.18 states that a WPS will be used in actual production welds.
Para. 4.18.1, 4.18.2 and 4.18.3 only govern position and thickness or dia.
Para. 4.22 states that only changes beyond the essesntial variables listed in tbl. 4.12 require re-qual.
Para. 5.2.1 states the base metals of tbls. 3.1 and 4.9 should be used WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
Para. 5.5 states the a welder will use a WPS for production welds.

Does the code state that welder may only weld the base metals defined in Tbls 3.1 or 4.9 if the welder is performing a production weld in acordance with an approved SWPS that governs base metals not outside the limitations set forth in para. 1.2? (Namely M-1/ S-1/ P-1 base metals.)

The welder is qualified regardless of base materials that they tested on.....
the essential variables requiring requalification of the welder are listed in Table 4.12 of D1.1:2006.(no mention of base materials in this table)
Hope this helps,
John Wright

John...

so would you say that the welder is in fact qualified to weld base metals outside Tbls 3.1 and 4.9 of the D1.1 provided the SWPS base metals are not disqualified by D1.1 para. 1.2.

Lorne,

For what it's worth, 3.4 allows for welding of unlisted materials using a prequalified WPS for auxillary attachments (i.e. non load carrying members attached to load carrying members) which fall within the chemical composition range of a steel listed in Table 3.1, provided EOR approval.

Hi Lorne,
It may be easier to answer the question directly if we knew the whole situation you have with this welder.

Here is the situation...
Sure, and by the way I really appreciate your time.

I have welders who have qualified in accordance with D1.1, Ch. 4, Sect. C.
I have qualified them on 3.00" O.D. Schedule 80 pipe in the 6G position, with backing, SMAW.
The SWPS I used for the performance qualification test was ANSI/AWS B2.1-1-016-94 "Shielded Metal Arc Welding of Carbon Steel (M-1/ P-1, S-1), 1/8- 1 1/2" Thick, E7018, As-welded or PWHT Condition.

Are the welders qualified to now weld on M-1, P-1, S-1 base metals as well the base meatls of D1.1 Tbl 3.1 and 4.9?

Does anything in the D1.1 prohibit the welders form welding outside the D1.1 pre-approved base metals?
