Q: Is there any national requirement to perform both radiography and bend testing on welder qualification tests? A: Not that I am aware of, although certain employers and projects may require that all welders pass both a NDE volumetric test such as radiography or ultrasonic testing along with a mechanical test such as bend testing prior to certification being issued and/or as a condition of employment. In these cases, the NDE inspection would first be performed followed by the mechanical testing phase. In any case, the minimum requirements for welder qualification and testing are detailed within each governing national specification for welding. Q: I have accepted employment with a small midwest structural company that wants me to develop an AWScompliant welding program. What can you suggest to help me in this effort? A: Welding programs will generally change over time as a company grows and/or changes its direction to suit its customers’ needs. So, when developing an initial program, look at encompassing the company’s current needs while being able to expand the program with minimal effort and cost. Following are some suggestions on how to do so. • Develop a general welding procedure that will provide direction and guidance for both shop and field welding applications relative to such items as a) Purpose and application b) Responsibilities and references c) Material selection and identification d) Weld details, welding symbols, etc. e) Filler metal control and issuance f) Equipment maintenance g) Welding safety h) Welding fit-ups, weld outs, and final welding i) Inspection By The Answer Is For info go to www.aws.org/ad-index For info go to www.aws.org/ad-index 34 Inspection Trends / April 2011
