Thermo Fisher Scientific Wins Good Design Award The Niton XL2 Series of XRF analyzers from Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc., Billerica, Mass., has been recognized with a Good Design™ award by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. The awards, the world’s oldest design competition of its kind, are conferred annually by the museum in conjunction with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. A record number of entries were received in 2010; recipients represent more than 36 countries. The Chicago Anthenaeum Museum will hold the Good Design Show in June 2011. The Niton XL2 analyzers also won an Editor’s Choice Award from Pollution Engineering magazine in the remediation category in 2010. Instron Renews Calibration Laboratory Accreditation Instron, Norwood, Mass., a provider of test equipment for the materials and structural testing markets, recently achieved renewal of its ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. The accreditation recognizes the laboratory has demonstrated the technical competence necessary to provide scientifically sound measurements in conducting a wide range of calibration services. The three-day re-accreditation assessment was conducted by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program, which is administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. ASQ Celebrates 65th Anniversary The American Society for Quality (ASQ), headquartered in Milwaukee, Wis., recently celebrated its 65th anniversary. The society was formed in 1946 during a time when quality experts and manufacturers sought ways to sustain the many quality-improvement techniques used during World War II. It began as The American Society for Quality Control with 253 members from 17 quality-related societies. George Edwards, then director of quality assurance at Bell Telephone Labs, was elected its first president.
