Greetings,

My company has just started a sister company that will specialize in non-ferrous work. There first job will be a water treatment plant.  The spec requires that all stainless steel shall passivated and that it should be done according to ASTM A380.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a process for passivation?

We will be doing stair and rail packages so a dip tank is out of the question!

I am wondering if it would be best to use phosphoric acid or nitric acid???

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

regards
DJB

Do you have a copy of the applicable ASTM standard? What alternatives to a tank type dip do they permit?

Good Morning David!

Here is one company that does offer some excellent gel products that are supposedly "Green" friendly but then again, everybody advertises that phrase lately so, definitely read in between the lines... This company has an excellent reputation worldwide so, it's safe to say that there products are top-notch. They're now called Outokumpu and they used to be Avesta Polarit...

A late great gentleman who used to work for them, Chuck Meadows was one of the most knowledgeable persons I knew with respect to Stainless steels... Chuck was a tremendous contributor here in this forum, and will forever be missed for not only his technical expertise, but also for his willingness to share his knowledge, his patience and his sense of humor which inspired not only myself during his final days alive, but also to everyone in here who knew him through the forum... So, I can say with great confidence that these folks will treat you right as I have dealt with them in the past also!!! ;)

Here's a .pdf on passivation:

Here is the contact information for a distributor in the USA

Here is the link to their publications in .pdf format:

Here is another company named Walter International and they offer similar products although, I haven't used their products so, I cannot attest to their quality:

Hope this info helps! ;)

Good Morning Stephan!

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who remembers Chuck!!! ;) Btw, does Fronius still offer their "MagicCleaner" Stainless steel passivating system??? The only reason I did not include it with the other products in my previous post is because I could not locate it in the Fronius web site... I know that they do offer the trainings with "MagicCleaner" in the .pdf brochure. :)

Once again, thank you for your kind words. ;)

Respectfully,
Henry

Good Day to you, Henry!

Ouuch!

I mean to mean, yes.

But you know me, I am honest.

Even though this is certainly a great tool, to the best of my knowledge, I rather would recommend it for 'semi-professional' applications.

Hmmm, how to say? Even for... smaller 'jobs', stair-rails, etc.? So to speak.

You got me..? :-):-):-)

I am sure, the excellent links you have posted will point David in the absolute right direction! :-)

All the Best to you,
Stephan

P.S. I am sure there are some more appreciated forum fellow members who are remembering the outstanding Chuck Meadows from time to time. I am still missing both his unique posts and the unique discussions Jeff and Chuck had at that time! Certainly the embodiment of the term 'dream team'! :-)

Hello again David!

Here's an article that may help you navigate ASTM A-380-06 better... however, Al (803056) is correct in making sure that you are allowed to use alternatives to a tank type dipping process to pickle, and passivate the products you will be supplying to your customer, and you may also want to confer with the customer to make sure all parties are on the same page - so to speak. ;) Although I also see ASTM-A-380-06 called out on prints, it is not a passivation specification but a recommended practice for cleaning of stainless steel alloys. ;) ASTM A-967-05 is another specification whereby Citric acid based products can be used as an alternative but, it would be best to get authorization from the EOR before deciding to go with the alternative.

These folks do offer an alternative to the previously mentioned products and are based on citric acid as opposed to nitric acid based products:
