I called AWS today to see if it was acceptable to read the weld area that is blown into the edge block.  The only answer they could come up with is " the engineer needs to make that call".   I noticed in the earlier codes the edge block is not even brought up.  There is a paragraph and a picture in D1.1 on how to use the edge block but no real answer to the purpose.   My interpretation is that you can read the weld area blown into the edge block provided it is a code shot.

That is a clear cut issue to me. As long as your within density constraints and other image quality issues,
and you are reading between the station markers, no problems.

Yes you can, just as stated above, as long as all of the exposure variables are accounted for.
You read through backing bars, when doing double wall exposures single wall viewing you read through additional material etc. etc.

The prupose of the edge block is to keep from undercutting the image, the only caution is if something is noted make sure it's not in the block before you dig into the weld.

I think also it would be a Level III's call anyway, not the engineer.

The blocks are supposed to be radiographically clean to begin with. If they are not, then there is a code non conformance.

correct but you know how it goes

I know some companies are to cheap to shoot the blocks. I also know many of them don't shoot them at the angles they need to. Not a lot of point in shooting them when your actual shot is at angle, and you shoot the block straight on.

right then you get those radiographers that will pick up anything not taking in account the requirements.
The key is knowing what you got, I found sometimes that is established after the fact. as I know many are well aware of.

Thanks to all.

Those blocks are supposed to have a certain surface finish as well. Can't just burn yourself off an edge block and touch it up with a disc grinder.

Thats correct. ANSI 125 microinch.
