Is it possible to weld 304 stainless steel to titanium? And if so what process would be used and what filler metal would be used?

Thanks

Chas,

Welcome to the forum!

It's not going to happen with any of the big 4 processes.

I don't even think an EB would do it.

Maybe a vaccume braze?

Maybe something wierd like explosion welding..

Friction Stir process anyone???
Perhaps a specially modified laser system could do the job also but, without any further specifications or details, it's going to be improbable for you to get a specific answer that will suit your particular needs. :) :) :)

Respectfully,
Henry

I admit I know little about how the process really operates, but would ultrasonic welding work?
Adding about 1/2 a cents worth...

where a bond is needed, explosion welding can be used.  Components can be machined out of the bonded plate, and then subsequently welded to like components for a transition joint.  If you are asking if the two can be arc-welded together, then that would be a "no".

Perhaps a root pass of 50% Ti, 35% Fe, 10% Cr, 6% Ni, C in the ppt's and not the ppm's, might call it beta crackalloy.
You'd wanna call a minerologist to do the analysis because I'm guessin that stuff is gonna be a rock.

Thank you, to all who replied. It confirmed pretty much what I had expected.
Thanks again,
Chas. Miller
