Does anybody on here run downhill on pipe with the vantage 300?

I have a 305D which is basically the same thing just no 3 phase.  I downhill pipe weld with it most of the time using 5P, HYP+, 70+, 85, and some down and up with 5P and LH-70 and some dual shield 712C and G80M wire.  Here in southern New Mexico all you see any more are the Vantage 300, Ranger 305D, Miller PipePro 304, and Por 300.  I don't see the DC machines much any more.  Are you thinking about doing some downhill pipe with you Vantage 300?

I have a Vantage 400. It welds OK. It doesn't have a very smooth arc reguardless of where the arc force is set. Awhile back someone was dissing the machine saying that it had problems making XRAYS. I haven't had ANY problems at all, 6010 or 70+. Ted

I welded with a buddy of mine today who had hell getting material to stack up for him with the 300 vantage  but, to be fair he says he hasn't had it for very long and maybe just isn't quite used to it yet. He did seem to have an easier time with my pro 300 though!?!?

There is a learning/setting curve with all the bells and whistles that these machines have.  Luckily when I got my 305D I had a week off to play with it and break it in or I would have been up a really, really big creek.  Now I can't think of welding with any other machine.

I was curious, I've had mine for awhile now, but never had to do any downhill pipe work to pass x-ray, have welded alot of lo-hi with it and love it, but I just wondering if it was usable on pipeline, because i've been practicing my downhill work, any advice and/or tips would be apprecieted.

i remember that post .machines dont have problems making xray  the person welding with it does.

True, but the new machines take some getting used to, I was wandering how people liked that down hill pipe setting, and if they thought it really made that much difference, and how the machine itself was holding up, mine still has low hours. But it so far is a nice machine, especially compared to my 97 SA-250, noisey, vibrating, big, heavy machine.

i run mine on downhill for everything including rolling out spools , i find it has less tendency to snuff and for mainlining it is the only way to go. It passes xray all day long

Where do you keep your arc force most of the time for root and the cap?

i keep it pretty much centered for fabbing and on roots , sometimes i put it a little soft for downhill capping
