Any field welding engineers on this forum? More specifically in the nuclear construction field?
Parent - - By CWI555 (*****) Date 07-01-2008 13:16
You should probably be more specific on that. I am a field welding engineer/NDT level III on the only current nuclear construction project (state side). However my primary function is project NDE Level III, the weld part is secondary.

What project and for who might I ask?

When you say "only current nuclear construction project" do you mean new construction? Would that be the South Texas Project?

I'm curious to the definition of a "field welding engineer" and how that differs from a "welding engineer" I'm gonna take a wild guess that part of it has to do with working at the jobsite, but what sort of duties does a field welding engineer have?

I think it depends on who you ask, but an example would be Bechtel's definition...basically applying welding engineering to the field work see pasted text below:

CONSTRUCTION ENGINEER

Performs construction engineering assignments of a varied nature
requiring a full working knowledge of construction engineering
practices. Exercises professional judgment within the framework of
broad guidelines provided by superiors. May have responsibility to
provide direction to less experienced construction engineers, or
construction office technical or clerical personnel. May specialize in
a single field or area or assume a lead role in a specific segment of a
construction project.

Assigned to a single discipline within a single area of a project.
On a large project, performs a variety of assigned duties, interfacing
with related tasks being performed within a single discipline.
On a small to medium-sized project, performs assigned duties relating to
all activities within a single discipline and interfacing with related
tasks being performed in more than one discipline.
Receives technical direction in the form of moderate supervision.

-- Demonstrates a personal commitment to safety
-- Provides leadership and takes personal accountability for site
safety, environmental, and health program.
-- Participate in the Project Chromium Material Assessments, and Hex
Chrome mitigation activities.
-- Implement and maintain Bechtel Field Welding program.
-- Provide specialized welding engineering support for construction to
ensure construction meets all code and Bechtel procedures. Provide
technical expertise for ASME, API, and AWS or other code designed and
fabricated items
-- Qualified/certified as welding inspector (CWI) to support inspections
of weld installations in accordance with applicable codes and standards
-- Orbital (machine or automated) pipe welding experience, including
development of programs and field implementation and applications
Experience also with flux core welding process.
-- Maintain weld inspection records including quantity reporting of
completed welds and status data base tracking system
-- Help manage pre- and post-weld heat treatment program whether self-
performed by Bechtel or subcontracted
-- Help manage rod room and rod room attendent to ensure all weld filler
materials are controled and meet Bechtel and Code requirements
-- Help manage the NDE subcontract to include scheduling and coordinate
with construction and subcontract for the best possible shooting
schedule at the least cost and least impact to construction
-- Help manage and monitor welding test facility to insure high quality
welders are being tested and hired
-- Work with Foreman to keep up with weld documents and ensure the
credibility/accountability of the Welding Program
-- Manage issue and maintain welder qualifications and welder stamps
-- Develops, coordinates and implements approved welding training
programs, including on the job training.
--Conducts or supervises welding training courses and programs. Arranges
for technical assistance as required.
-- Administers and monitors all welding training and development
programs to ensure goals are attained, schedules are met, modifications
are made as necessary and reporting requirements are observed.

experience

Yes I am well familiar with Bechtel's definition as you are probably already aware.
What was your specific question?
Parent - By Metarinka (****) Date 07-01-2008 15:30
thanks for that  job description it's basically an engineer in the field controllin the processes keeping things in check and a person on the ground to goto when things get out of hand.
<-- 10 months till Bachelors in welding engineering degree :)

nice to see what type of jobs welding engineers do

That would be Watts Barr. South Texas is not to that stage yet to my knowledge.
Parent - - By Erik Irvine (*) Date 07-01-2008 15:10
OK thanks, do you work for Bechtel then?
Parent - By CWI555 (*****) Date 07-01-2008 15:12
Yes I do.

Erik,
I tried to post this yesterday but I guess it did not work. There is a project at Hanford Washington called the WTP project. It is taking the 50.000 Million Gal. of nuclear waist stored in underground tanks and turning it into glass. It's called the Waist to Glass project. It's a 15 billion dollor project that will eventually eliminate the need for underground storage of this material. It takes the waist and mixes it with molten glass and then puts it into SS casks and then it is shipped to Yuka mountain for storage. They are looking for QC welding engineers. If you go to the Bechtel web site and look under jobs in Richland Washington you will see the postings.

It has been very cool to be part of cleaning the environment.
Hope that helps
Jim

I was wanting to get on that project. I visited the area months ago. The family thought of relocating to the area. What the hiring status on field engineers at this time? I was dealing with Mike Kirkus with Bechtel.

I'll send you a PM on that one.
