turn the heat up , ( everyone has their diff. ways ) frame sq a bit 2 much seems 2 me bigger gap lower heat & bead tends to come out flat, thats just me. when I test i'll set coupons vertical w 2 spacers tack front stick a wedge take out spacers tack back , then u have ur sides eye ball it which ever side has more gap tack that one , that'll pull ur other side ,set it on stands & get after it . I only grind starts when testing, i'll even grind hot pass lightly if i see slag that buffer wont get out . do that on a line & the guy's in the back will run over u. I live in Zapata Tx. way way way down south.
what size land do you guys use on 6" and 8" pipe sch 40. would you use 1/8 or 5/32 5p+ for bead, and gap size 3/32 or1/8.

I've never paid attention to landing ,just slap grinder on there & flatten it out a bit, 1/8th 5p+ bead ,gap 3/32 -1/8th seems to much 4 me
You take out the wagon tracks, do mean don't stepp the rod at all? What size landing do you find right and you say use a 1/16 gap? I've been welding a long time, just not on pipe much and never had to x-ray anything, all I've welded on is oilfield equipment.
when testing I really try to get wagon tracks out by grinding then i buff it ,step rod ,but you wont be running hot pass as hot as on pipeline.not more than a 1/16 gap depends on size of pipe also 4 example 2" I use a pretty big gap 4" & up a little tighter I'll see if i can measure the thickness of spacing tool landing never pd. attent. 95 % of our work is x- ray when i first started there was'nt very much of it now u can't get rid of them ,It's not so bad our's I've got them helping me grind & buff on their down time since I don't have a helper haha (hope they don't read this)
