Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / Preheat necessary for AISI 5150 weld?
- - By - Date 05-05-2000 01:25
Hi,
I will be welding an alloy similar to AISI 5150 as part of an automotive driveline component. I plan to use the MIG process with the standard Co2 gas mix and will be welding to 1018 or possibly A36 steel with mild steel wire. Will I need to pre or post heat to prevent cracking? Also, can anyone recommend an affordable book on welding proceedure for carbon steel and steel alloys? Thanks.

Dear Randy:

There is a book titled "Welding steels without hidrogen cracking" by Bailey et Al. In this book you can obtain information about safes procedures (preheat, heat imput, post'heat, etc.) for weld medium carbon steels, high carbon steels and alloy steels developed by The Welding Institute. You can get information about this book from Woodhead Publishing Limited: www.woodhead-publishing.com

I hope this help you.
