Quick question,
If a welder is qualified to the semi-auto FCAW process, is he qualified to an automatic weld process where he becomes a welding operator? My question stems from a situation where we have welders qualified to The FCAW process, but need them to do automatic seam welding, does their in house cert cover them for that?

Rick,

Not sure if the welders are qualified to AWS D1.1 but,

Welders qualified for SAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW shall be considered as qualified welding operators in the same process(es) and subject to the welder essential variable limitations.

AWS D1.1:2006, page 150, Table 4.12 sub note b.

So, a welder who is qualified to the FCAW process, is also qualified to an automatic FCAW process?

I see it this way.  If the welder can perform semi-automatic FCAW, then he or she should be able to apply those skills to the automatic FCAW process.

It may require some additional training to familiarize them to the controls but, that is not a variable.

Process is an Essential Variable.
