Im doing a lot of vertical up welding at the minute with 3/32 6010 rods on pipe and plate and was just wanting to know if it is possible to get the slag peeling off or self cleaning as we call it? with any other rods i use ive no problem getting this to happen im around 45 amps at the minute on -ve to keep the heat input down lower, would save me loads of time cleaning

A cellulose based flux rod will not have a heavy slag coating as a low hydrogen rod with an iron based powder flux will. It will have a "scale" that will have to be removed with a hammer & brush. With 6010, that's just the way it is. Good luck. S.W.

Yea thats the best i can end up with is a scake that chips off, im using BOHLER 6010 rods at the minute, i might try the lincolns 5p+ the next time just for a change, BOHLER rods are still great tho i remember using BOHLER BVD rods ages ago in the shipyards they were very good

Never used Bohler rods. Heard they're good though. 5p+ is basically the same as the 'ol brick red, but runs in either DC polarity & is a little more stable, or so they say. It's a great rod, you just won't get the pretty welds like a LO-HI rod is going to produce.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll be happy with 5p+. Lincoln's 7018 Excalibur is excellent as well. :-) Steve.
