Chromemoly,new to me.

I've been welding for years now,mainly MIG,Stick,Oxy-Acet,but my brother has a project for me that involves Chromemoly,I haven't the first clue as to what is needed in relations to equipment/gases...the material will be .125" plate and tube thickness at best,and they need to take a bit of a beating,what he has in mind,I dunno,any clues...thanx

I understand that a lot of old chrome moly tube frame airplanes were oxy acetylene welded.

There are many different Cr-Mo materials around. Do you know which one you are welding? If you tell us this, we could give you a little more information. In general, the following is applicable:

1) Pre-heat. Anything from around 60°C to 250°C
2) Maintaining a post heat to allow hydrogen to diffuse out.
3) Post weld heat treatment to temper the weld.
