Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Certifications / 6G prequalify for 3G and 4G??

Well, basically what the subject says. If you do a 6G does that or can it prequalify you for the 3G and 4G AWS D1.1?? Just something I was thinking about today and did'nt know if it would or not. Two different procedures I know, one with the 6010/7018 combo and the other straight 7018. Ok, well short post that's it.

If a welder qualifies to a 6G test, they are also qualified to weld in the Flat, Horizontal, Vertical, and Overhead positions.

And I believe using a 7018 which is an F4 designation, will also allow the welder to use 6010 which is and F3 designation.

I would say you need to make sure that you are working within the same code. Although ASME and AWS are somewhat similar, there are differences in variables. I would assume you would be working with some sort of pipe code if you are welding 6G. Not that you cant do 6G within D1, but usually it's a pipe code when 6G is done. Cross reference your variables to be certain.

In AWS D1.1, as well as in B2.1, a qualification test in the 6G position qualifies a welder for all positions.
