I'm a Pipe Welder/ fitter. I work mostly by myself. I'm 30.  I went to the eye doctor, first time in ten years. Prior to welding I had  better then 20/20 vision. Now its less then 20/20. I've been welding for 4 years. With a shade 10-11 lens, safty glasses, shade 5 lens when cutting. I use a Next gen off and on depending if Im on a later. Are their any bands of lenes or auto darking helments more safe then the others? I'm not that mocho guy that likes to cut metal with no glasses.

You are 30

JK, Ive always had better than 20/20 but it seems some small letters at distance tend to blur more than they did a few years ago. I believe a shade 10 is a shade 10 regardless of brand.

The knees started popping too right?

If you want to know the true condition of your eyes, go to an opthomoligest, not an optometrist.  There is a big difference.  I just found out the hard way.  I had gotten something in my eye from working in my shop.  It was so irritating that I would up going to the er to get it out.  They treated me and recommended seeing my eye doctor as a follow up.  So next day off I go to my eye doctor (optometrist) he looks in my eyes and has me read an eye chart, says everything is ok.  My eye still didnt feel right so I called my regular doc to get a recommendation of where to go next.  He set me up with an opthomoligest, now this guy gave my eyes an serious going over.  Put the flourescent dye in my eye and found three more pieces of metal in my eye.  Now things are back to normal.  The opthomoligest said if I had waited long enough for the metal to rust I would have had a much more serious situation. I guess the difference is like between a General Practioner and a Specialist.  For my money next time I will go for the specialist.
just my 2 cents worth.

LongArc; Its not your eyes that are the problem, its that your arms are getting shorter.

Welders usually go thru 4 stages during their careers.  First the eyes will go and they start to rely more on their hand.  Once their hand starts to shake they will begin to rely more on their hearing.  Then when the hearing begins to go they will start to rely on their mind.  When their mind starts to go they become Inspectors. . . . . .

Ruthless.. lol   Yeah my eyes are giving me probkems lately because I don't weld enough anymore.  They're fine till I weld for a minute and then after that they hurt the rest of the day.  If I weld everyday for a couples weeks they hurt for those couple of weeks and then they don't hurt anymore.  It's like they get used to stairing at a little molten puddle after two weeks.  Once they get used to it and I stop or get laid off for awhile, I'm screwed and have to start all over again.lol

LongArc

Please have yourself checked for Diabetes. It causes loss of vision after a period of high sugar readings.
