I have no direct experience in EB welding and am trying to write a process for the repair of an axle sleeve. The sleeve is made of 17-4 Cres about 0.125" thick. What we are doing is cutting the flanged end off the sleeve and replacing it. This is a butt joint with an EB weld, 100% penetration from one side. My question is: When the weld is reaching the end (coming back to the start after welding entire circumference), how does EB finish? Does it weld back over the start and then taper off? Or does it leave a small hole that needs to be repaired by GTAW or something?

Any information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The weld should gradually taper off, not an abrupt stop, this is done by lowering the milliamps while you are still rotating, gently decreasing the weld width and depth until the weld is a shallow narrow taper. Over lap the start by at least one quarter to one half the weld length and you should be fine.
