Can anybody tell me why in my book for ordering materials the ASTM # for these metals is A 240 but in my D1.6 classifies them under an ASTM#
A 666?

I guess it depends on which ASTM specification you purchase it from. If you'll look at Table 3.2 (316L is listed as ASTM A617 and A240 Plate,Sheet, Strip) then on the next page or two over it is listed again as (ASTM A666 under Plate, Sheet,Bars, Strips). It is also listed under Pipes and Fittings with another ASTM A #. Watch the Min. tensile and yeild figures because they differ also. Might want to look at your contract drawings and job specs. to see what they call for, and then you could purchase the correct steel for which they are asking.
Hope I didn't make this too confusing,

Thank you that makes alot of sense, just overlooked a few things but that can happen when you are deling with these codes.

The different specifications have different scopes. One is aimed at purely pressure vessel service while the other looks at other services as well.
