Hi,

I am repairing an antique 1887 riveted boat hull made of wrought iron. I have been using 3/32" 6013 to reface worn rivet heads, but I recently read that AWS ER 70s-5 mig wire will work well too. I have an LN-25 wire feeder and a Lincoln R3S-600 CV power supply to run it, and its all set up to run .045 wire with 75%Ar/25% CO2. Can anyone translate this AWS standard into a manufacturers product name? Searching the Lincoln site and these boards yielded no results for ER70S-5.

I have a website documenting the restoration at www.tug13.com

Thanks in advance,

Capt. Eric Fischer

In response to your question I have not heard of 70S-5 before I am looking in my ESAB book of filler wires and there are S-2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 wires.

After further research I have found that ESAB may have a wire that is E70S-5 not ER70S-5.

Capt Fischer:
You should be able to cross-reference the AWS designation to "commercial specs" using the AWS 15.XX series of specifications.

frypan:
You may want to consider the metallurgical side of GMAW electrodes. Not sure where you plan to put your vessel in the water, but, you don't want to be the Titanic of the New Millenium.

Impact properties of the weld metal may be an issue for you:

ERXXS-2: 20 ft-lbs @ -20 degrees F
ERXXS-3: 20 ft-lbs @ 0 degrees F
ERXXS-4: not required
ERXXS-5: not required
ERXXS-6: 20 ft-lbs @ -20 degrees F
ERXXS-7: 20 ft-lbs @ -20 degrees F

I did not list all electrode classifications.

DGXL,
Good thought.
