Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / Question on welding leads

I am going to replace my existing welding leads on my rig,and was thinking about getting them from weldingsupply.com,they have the best prices of anywhere I`ve checked. Has anyone gotten leads form them and are they a good quality lead. I will be getting size 2/0, about 300 feet. Reason why I ask is when I originally bought lead 25 years ago, some of it turned out to be a stiffer lead that is harder to roll up and almost stands up in cold weather. After welding awhile it gets flexible and is easier to wind up. Any thoughts and comments are appreciated,Thanks.

I bought mine from an outfit in Minnesota - they'll print name / number or whatever you want on it for free - number of colors and real flexible.  Made in USA.

Check eBay for welding leads, name escapes me at present - copperman or something like that.

leterburn: How do You like those leads?

hey, they work great and more flexible than the local boys have -  they've got an inside lining as well - looked it up on eBay, his user ID is coppercableman to be sure you get the same ones..  made over in Fairbault, Minnesota.  I've got about 100 feet on my reels and short leads for my hoosier pole.  I use a lighter gauge whip for stinger.

Reasonable as I recall - believe he sent it Speedy Delivery to me - which they have good rates from Minnesota to North Dakota.  Fast too.

Flexoprene or something like that great lead stays soft and doesn't cut up easy.

FYI - a cable chart from Miller owners manual shows 2/0 300 feet will carry 150 amps with a possible 4 volt loss. IMHO if you are going to weld at 200 amps 3/0 or 250 amps 4/0 would be a better choice. It becomes quite noticiable when using a voltage sensing wire feeder if the cable is too small. For flex a 25 foot whip with #1 will carry 250, #2 will carry 200 amps and #3 will carry 150 amps. If the cable is too small the resistance heat can ruin a very expensive length of cable.

The more copper strands in a cable, the more flexible it is.

here is a voltage drop calculator if your interested.

I have gotten welding cable form both welding supply and copper cable man on eBay  http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/coppercableman .  The cable mans cable is very high quality and is the best cable I have ever had.  Welding supply's cable is the same cable that the local guy sells but for a lot less.  The cable mans price and quality is even better.
