Why do you say A multipass fillet needs to be qualified?
If you look at table 3.7 max. electrode diameter for flat fillet, using SMAW is 5/16" EXCEPT root passes which is 3/16" so how could you use 5/16 rod without having a root pass using 3/16" or smaller electrode?
I would say no, based on the weld type column stating, any layer of width.
The only two situations that come close would be multiple electrode SAW, or note e for GMAW/FCAW. Both of these state: if width exceeds one inch then to split layers.
I agree, but then what is the max single pass layer width limit for a mult-pass fillet weld on plate using FCAW in the horizontal position? Do you have to split layers when over 5/8" wide, or is that just for a butt weld? (table 3.7 note 'e')
A single pass FCAW 1/2" fillet weld is acceptable with a face width of 0.71".
