My back ground is industrial metal fabrication. 25yrs. Lots of brewery work. SS fab. Did some pipe welding for a large mech contractor for about a year (certified wth them) I would like to do more pipe and learn. Looking for work in Co. I would be willing to take a lower wage if the learning possibilitys were there. Anybody have any ideas on how to get in some where. I am super reliable, no DUI, never been arrested.

You might want to check with local 58 (Pipefitters) in Colorado Springs and see if they need any welders.  I know they have a large power plant project going down there so they might need welders.

mastermetal,
"I am super reliable, no DUI, never been arrested."

You are not going to fit in very well. LOL :-) These are the top three "must have's" in this industry! Twist off a couple of times, get a DUI charge, and possibly an assault charge, and you will not have any problems getting in to the pipeline/oil field. Now, I am just poking fun, please DO NOT take this seriously. :-)

I will ask around and if I hear of anything I will let you know.

Tah Haaaaaw...........!

A prison record helps around here too. Most guys are less apt to screw you if they believe they will get thrown off a bridge, or end up duct taped in a trunk.

What part of Colorado are you in mastermetal?

I'll tell you, it's good to know pipe, but way more lucrative to have fabrication skills - way more. And if you are proficiant at both, you will go a long way in a state like Colorado.  A lot of guys that come up here thinking they will get their foot in the door don't really achieve much more than a couple paychecks and a good swift kick in the hynie. They could weld pop cans together, but start scratching their heads when they have to engineer something big. Not only is competition tough here, so is the cost of living. If you're used to paying 500 bucks for rent and come here with your 60 dollar an hour rate, you will find out in a hurry that you won't make it. Shoot, you cant rent a double wide here for less than 1500.00 a month. The welding society here is a revolving door of wanna be's, has beens, and big mouths. They all end up leaving. The rest of us that stick around, well.........there's a reason why we survive here. Some of us do honest to goodness business, and the others have to steal their work. I'm the former of the 2.

I've got a big project on the drawing board. If it happens, I'll need hands that can think on their feet, and keep up with me. I bid high so we'll see what happens..........

ps. yeah I never had a dui cause it was part of the plea agreement..............for real.

You will probably be alright. Just don't break anyone's skull. The justice system frowns on that!

Good info sourdough. I am in northern Co. Thats interesting what you say about being able to fabricate, its nice to hear. All I read and hear about is PIPE welders and how much they make. Thats why I want to learn that end of things. Another ? What is a rig chaser and what kind of work do they do. Buy the way this forum is awsome, you can ask all the ? you always wanted to ask but were afraid to.
Parent - By Sourdough (****) Date 10-01-2008 22:15
Where in Northern Co? We may have met in Craig, when I was up there.

A rig chaser is a rig welder. A contractor that runs around servicing drilling rigs. It's darn lucrative, but dangerous and demanding.

There's a company in Rifle called John's, Inc. I assume he is a welding broker. I do not have any personal knowledge of this outfit just
pass by there when working in Rifle. Phone number for John's is 970.625.5022, if you're a live warm body and work hard finding work in
Rifle, CO isn't hard finding a place to stay or live is!!! Also there are two large natural gas processing plants being built in Meeker, CO
so if you're good at SS there might be alot of work in those plant's. The cryogenic end of the gas plants our course are all SS.

I would not suggest going to Johns welding, you might and you might not get your money.
Parent - By Sourdough (****) Date 10-06-2008 16:24
DONT GO TO JOHNS!!!!!! I REPEAT, DONT GO TO JOHNS!!!!!!!!!

John is easy to deal with, but you wont be dealing with him. You will be dealing with his wife, Angela. She will blead you like a grape and hold out on your pay, like it is her money................SHE IS SATAN!

I speak from experience - 90 days on a 2000.00 invoice.

Sourdough,
I live near Greeley, but would be interested in taking a look at that job if you get it.  My numbers in my sig. if you want to give me a shot.  A lot of fab/design experience.

Mastermetal,
Depending on where your at, you might check with Ensign.  I worked for them for a while.  At the time, I couldn't commit enough hours so it didn't work out.  Keep that in mind if you get in.  I kind of kick myself now.  There yard is in Greeley.
Parent - - By Sourdough (****) Date 10-06-2008 16:26
Any chance you know Shane Slinger? He does a bunch of work out here for Ensign.
Parent - - By 8898jsmit (*) Date 10-07-2008 00:51
Name isn't familiar to me. Might recognize his truck if he ever came in the yard.  I'm sure I never worked with him though.
