You could probably make a pretty penny working there but they couldn't pay me enough to take that chance.

It is difficult to enjoy the fruits of your labors if you're pushing up daisies.

Best regards - Al

Hello DKUMPUNEN, the folks who I have talked to who have worked as contractors over there have said that unlike the military folks who are there, they weren't allowed to be armed themselves. Personally, I don't know that I could work under those sorts of conditions. I do understand that there could certainly be some good money to be made, yet as Al stated, it's a little hard to enjoy it if you aren't around afterwards. Best regards, aevald

I dont understand - 'g' is nowhere near 'p' on my keyboard. And why can't WI's (C or not) be armed - imho they have as much right to sling lead at Afphanis in Afphanistan as any other invading mercenaries!!! Just kiddin guys, honest!

As for being able to arm yourself, I have seen it both ways. I was approached about a few jobs over there, and some would not allow you to carry a firearm as they would provide armed escorts everywhere you went, and one in particular it was a requirement that you take a gun handling class and be willing and able to carry a firearm. FWIW

I know a pipefitter who went there around 2003 to train locals to weld.
He had to be escorted by local teenagers hired by the multinational firm to protect him.  They had little training, a rifle, and were smoked up on hash most of the time.
A translator, plenty of cash for bribes, etc were the norm.  Don't even think about looking at the local women.
You'll get killed if you do.   He told me he was Not allowed to carry firearms but had a pistol anyway.  Probably to shoot himself in the head
rather than being taken prisoner and beheaded on the internet.

If you can't spell it, you probably don't want to go there.  Research is the key.  Use your computer so you can avoid being beheaded on the internet for all the world to see.  Just a thought.

There are a lot of get rich quick postings out there. Some in Nigeria, some in S. America, etc etc. As a rule of thumb, If it's sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
There are in fact 100K - 1/4 million plus contracts to be had out there, but they are in places you may or may not come back from.
I look at it this way, 100K to 150K in states is reasonably good deal. 1/4 million plus in a place I stand a 50/50 chance of being killed not such a good deal.

It is possible to get to the 1/4 million/year mark in the states with the right cert package, but your going to be working 360 out of 365 days to do it typically.
I know one individual that took on a contract in Canada that has turned into a 1 million plus deal, but when all taxes, wages for help, and everything else he's had to foot, it's kicked him back to 150k actual gain.

My take on it for what it's worth.

why not and why can't if the offer is good. There are plenty of good inspectors from Philippines willing to take the risk and challenge.
Parent - - By CWI555 (*****) Date 10-06-2008 14:56
There are also plenty of dead ones from the philippines as well. Which btw, being from the P.I. doesn't make your life worth any less than being from singapore, japan, or the usa etc.

I have a high regards with Filipinos, they are good workers and you can find them all over the world. Being Singaporean, I'm use to have plenty of good job opportunities at home and need not necessarily to work abroad, but it doest mean that I've a better life or career than those Filipinos who gained more $$$, challenging job and experience by working in Iraq or Afghanistan.

challenging is not the word I would use. I've seen the "camps" in some parts of the world they are put in. All they are missing is the word concentration.

Arial DC,
You must understand that the USA is involved in a war in this region.  This may explain our reluctancy to say that it is a good idea to work there.  We may be a more likely target than a person from the Phillipines.

Johnnyh,
BINGO!!! And FWIW even when we were not involved in the war in that region, Americans were, are, and always will be "unpopular" and considered "targets" in that region.

So you also mean that Filipino American came from USA will be more likely target than those person from Philippines. But both have same "brown skin" huh!!

I guess jobs are now not easily available in US due to financial crisis. Sorry to say that I will have a hard time to understand your reluctancy to work in a place where many American soldiers are assigned to keep peace and protect other nationals.

As long as you are happy with the salary offer, given a challenging role, able to bring your loveones provided with living $$ allowance and personal bodyguards per your request, then I think many Americans (either white, black, red skin etc) will have the interest to take jobs in that region. I'm very sure that you will have a better life than the out-of-work manager in LA who just killed his family members before taking his own life due to financial despair.

I think that most American put more value on there safety and insuring that there children will have parents to raise them.

"able to bring your loveones provided with living $$ allowance and personal bodyguards per your request,"

Are you suggesting that one might bring their family WITH them????

"So you also mean that Filipino American came from USA will be more likely target than those person from Philippines. But both have same "brown skin" huh!!"

In answer to this, YES, White, black, brown, or pink with purple polka-dots, American is American, and you WILL be a BIG target, regardless of skin color, or where your ancestry lies. Might as well be wearing a shirt with a big bullseye on it.

Yes, I am saying that a filipino American is a more likely target than a person from the Phillipines.  The key word is American and I am sure they have ways to find out ones' nationality.  Sure there are American soldiers over there assigned to keep the peace but that doesnt mean there is no violence.  We lose soldiers almost on a daily basis in that region.  I am sorry if you dont understand my reluctancy to be an advocate of those jobs.  I am sure there will be many Americans who will take the jobs of which you speak.  The money is good.  It still seems dangerous to me and you have said nothing to convince me otherwise.

Good day,
John

Damn, I've mellowed.  Luckily, I didn't read where he called me a chicken after a night of drinkin'.  Who knows how I would have responded. :)

Are you single, or do you have a family? And if you have a family, will you take them with you?

you may want to ask these companies Halliburton's Kellogg, Brown and Root, Bechtel etc if they still have vacancy for QA/QC personnel position. Hope you'll get a good deal.

Goodluck.
