are there any special techniques for welding 1 inch thick core plugs in cast steel. the core plug diameters are 2 inches, with a v groove weld prep. They seem to crack in the root when TIG welding due to stress
any help / advice / trick of the trade greatly appreciated

are  they  wrought   or  cast  pieces   ?

for   some  reason  on  API  610  pumps  our  suppliers  used  to  insist  on   cast  core  plugs -

my  experience  has  been  to use  the  same   material  as  the  casting   ( A  216   Gr  WCB    or  Grade  WCC  ).

I  think  that  you  are in  for  trouble  if  you  weld  a  forged steel  bar  to   a casting as one  has a cast  structure   and  the other

piece is a forging  -  My  work  was on  API   610   pumps   which   were for  flamables  in  a refinery -

I would not expect the difference in microstructure between cast steel and wrought steel to be the problem, a weld deposit is a cast microstructure. Alloying elements I think would be the main issues.
