I teach apprentice school and just last night I was sketching what I call the friction clamp dog (third picture down), I'll show the kids that picture next week, I love that homemade tool. I did notice you used the two of the ears for bolt brackets good Idea.

Clamp dog!

I like this alot..... A good project for our metal fab class... Students can construct their own, use them for a project and then take them home... Leaving with the ability to make their own for various pipe diameters.

Thanks Thomas!

How about instead of using the nut make a cam-handle like is used on bicycle seat post.  It might be easier to install/remove and you wouldn't have to have wrenches too.

I've seen several variationes of these, the two halfs are held together with 5/8" studs ( easy to replace and are the same size as the allignment screw), the holes are over size to be able to dismount without having to separate the clamp completely. The steel piece shaped like a 7 is cut for one size welded at the end of the band and a little shorter where its welded to the side of the band.
Bolt it on tight and with a pipe that has a sag or a lift it will correct it enough at least until you get one or two tacks welded.

I like the tool, I have seen variations of that too, one using an angle iron with 2 bolts, one each side of the joint on a hinge with lock so it can be un-installed after tack up and fits various size pipe.
