I am in search of information on the specifications of plug welding vs slot welding. We have been assembling our products using a 3/8" round plug weld. We were given a proposal to change these welds to a 1/4" by 5/8" rectangle. I would like to find out all I can about the pros and cons of each.

Hello mjbharvey,
Can you give some more info about what you are welding(materials, welding processes, material thicknesses, codes/specs. you are working to, etc). Maybe someone will be able to better help you with your question if they know more about your application. I think maybe this is why no one has jumped in and give opinions yet, the question is alittle too general to answer without writing a book.
Hope this helps you get your answer,
John Wright

General rule is for the dia. of the hole to be 5/16" plus the material thickness min. According to AWS D1.1 anyway. Length of the slot is up to the cusomer though, but 1" should sufice for the length
