Can you take a picture of the bottom of your bed?  I would like to see what the frame work looks like?  Everyone shows the top which is very cool, but I've never seen the frame work involved.

Here are some pics of my frame work when I was building the bed, I ran angle iron down the frame to make it low profile.

Did you bolt the angle iron to the frame or is it welded?  On the first picture it looks like it is bolted but I could be wrong.  Is that as strong as channel iron running leangth wise?

It is bolted, its pretty strong, that is 4 x 4 x 3/8 angle iron, I can that bed off that truck in about an hour. I bolt as much stuff as I can, so I can make changes easily

yea that is my little toy. 36 inchs of lift with 57 inch tractor tires. the bumber is almost 6 ft likes about 3 or 4 inches

Hey, whats all this about utility beds and air cooled welders?? I got a flatbed, bought it cause I was working my truck and making money and it was quicker to buy the bed. Working on it though. I have a ranger 8 "air cooled" welder.  As long as my welder runs, welds I'll keep it. Sure an sa sounds great but then again I don't need 1300lbs added to the truck either when I can do it with a 600lb ranger. Never found that box with the million dollars I burried in the yard to start this business or has it been that long that some of you have forgotten?? Debt up to my ears from being a "professional mechanic" which got me..........in debt up to my ears(don't own fancy toys, tvs and all that) thats why I'm here doing this, plus I love the crap out of it! I would like a nice new miller or lincoln, liquid cooled monster....but can't justify spending the money...or afford it for that matter, you've gotta start somewhere right.

yes you are right with the what ever it takes attitude but those little machines cant run the big rod all day long like the water cooled machines alot of rig yards will let you in with a small machine but when it comes to big rod they cant hang all day and gouging will just burn them up that much quicker not to offend you or sound like an insult for the price you gave for that ranger new you could of got a used 200 and made it good please understand i am not insulting you in any way shape or form or even trying to start an argument. My brother has a small machine like yours and for fence jobs and stuff like that they are fine but for the bigger stuff they eventually get hot and you haqve to stop and let them cool down

you right about the money. I have been working 7 12s the majority of my working life. there is a good chance i will keep on working that. this is also my first rig truck and I sure didn't have the cash to build it or I would have been rigged out this time last year its been along time coming you just have to set your mind to what you want. I never even owned a 4x4 when I decided it looked like fun to rip up a few trails with the kids and 2 1/2 Years later and a bunch of rework i got a 4 wheel drive truck. it's all in what you want to do.. alot of people run whatever they have to make a living, I have a pretty good job not running my truck so in my spare time im building the rig that i want so when i do get started i wont be trying to build a bed on the truck im running

I'm not offended rafter, actually got the ranger used with 750 hours on it for $900. I understand what you mean about the all day thing. I've run it a few days all day between welding, running tools and so on, usually would shut it down for a few minutes while I took a break just to give it a rest! Like I said, we all started somewhere and we did'nt just fall into a $45k truck loaded with gear and top notch machines. 

I'll stick with it, love welding and fab, welding is one time I am truly relaxed, mind focused on one thing, the weld. As a mechanic it was thinking about what a p.o.s this car is, what genius thought about putting this junk here. Just want you "old guys" to remember that one time many years ago you were in a ratted out truck with a ratted out welder to get started.....unless you had credit or money tree. Next year have goals of being better than this year, maybe a few years a machine with a Diesel.

thats a good price actually very cheap for the machine you got. And yes i remember how and where i started and i still dont have the 45k truck with all the bells and whistles. i had a rebuilt completely 68 redface and it started burning oil bad rings on #2 piston good machine just cost me a fortune in oil my very 1st machine was a 68 redface i got for 1500 went thru 4 qts of oil a day when i parked it. Anyway my machines may look like hell and break down now and then but they are paid for maybe next year i can get a 200d or a 300d might get another 1 restored just have to see what happens first i need to get my wife a house and go from there. this is the 2nd time i've had to start from thew bottom of the barrel but i'm on my way back it's just slow goin with things the way they are

I understand completely rafter. My goal for my wife is getting her truck. Promised her a 97ish ford 4 door with a cummins conversion......open mouth insert foot right. I asked a guy if that was a good price on the machine and he said, "oh yeah, if you don't buy it let me know where it is so I can buy it for a spare". I can't agree with you more when you said, "but they are paid for". The only debt I want the business to have is insurance, paying for the truck.....2 more years....well, that's it. If the biz don't have cash to buy a $5k machine....it's gonna have to make due with what it has. I knew a guy that was the manager of the water works and they had an old lincoln in the shop on wheels. He wanted me to try and get it running years ago, but he finally said, we'll just get them to buy us a new one. I can't remember to well, but these sa's make me think of that one he had. I think it was from 1946 or something. I wonder if he still has it and if he'd be willing to part with it for say......next to nothing??

if i can find a way to write all this medicl stuff off the gov will end up owing me a really big chunk but obama will give to those that need it more than me so he thinks. Starting a bussines is very hard ast first and especially in these econmical times after the first things will pick back up i'm leaving for La. in the morning so i gotta go tell the fence job to wait til sumtime in january i'll prolly get sum1 to do it for me i dont like turning down work but it's only bout a 3 day job

Just my 2 cents worth.  If you powder coat the bed, be sure you have everything as you want beforehand.  Powder coat does not lend itself (at least on a full size bed) to touch up or later modifications to the bed.

Just another option for you.

I don't know how pricing is in your part of the country, but powder coating is outrageous here! I was quoted over $2,000.00 for this gooseneck adapter, I had it Line-X ed for $1,100.00.

Like already mentioned, better have everything complete before you do either.

so far I have had 1 quote for 825 and one for 650. I was going to paint but for that price I couldn't help but to go with powder coat, they do the blasting and coating

That's a good price for blasting and coating. I've had some handrail powdered coated and the number of colors is amazing. Basic black will help if you do add in the future. I've added stuff to mine and a basic can of gloss black does well. The pc don't like the heat but blends good enough that you really have to look to see it.

When I priced out steel to build a flatbed, not a true welding bed, it was around $800 for all of the steel. That was doing a "western hauler" type bed or skirted bed with side boxes. Time was a factor for me though, had to have it done in a hurry so ended up buying a gooseneck flatbed instead. I'm guessing materials for a true welding bed would be around there. Metal prices around here did go up this summer but no price hikes here recently.

I got about 900 dollars in steel on mine. I bought alot of the steel in the seconds yard, its good iron just odd ball sizes and cut out of square. I got led lights they were kinda spendy, then paint is going to be around 700-900. around 2000 total not counting oxy/acc., grinding disk, metabo blades,welding wire, 75/25, and electricity
