Sounds like underwater welding in zero vis conditions. Had an instructor in dive school that taught underwater welding that would tell you every thing that you were doing by listening to the dive radio. Took me years and lots and lots of rods to know what to listen for, and I actually figured it out teaching welding school. Kinda cool when you do figure it out, but underwater you can have your finger next to the welding rod and not burn yourself, that's how I can follow the contour of what need to be welded. Not sure how you would do that topside.
