I have recently received my CWI and now I would like to get an NDT certification.
Any suggestions, comments on what my next step should be?
I know that ASNT-TC-1 is an employer based certification, so is that even worth fooling with.

thanks

yes if that is what you will be doing......but if you plan to venture out on your own then you may want to check into the ASNT ACCP program......by the way ASNT is grandfathering everyone in to their program untill september i think (check the date).....for a fee of course

Wildturkey,
If they are just now getting started, I'm pretty sure that the education/experience requirements will not be met. That clause is for Level II's that have been doing this for some time and giving them a chance to be grandfather'd in to become Level III's without all the testing. At least that was the way I interpeted it to be.

4. How can NDT personnel become ASNT Centrally Certified?
Qualified NDT personnel can apply to ASNT to take ASNT Central Certification Program examinations. ASNT Central Certification Programs require the successful completion of examinations in any of five NDT test methods: MT, PT, UT, RT and VT.

However, for a one-year period, from 1 October 2002 through 30 September 2003, Level II personnel certified in accordance with Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A and Level IIIs with three years of experience as ASNT NDT Level IIIs in applicable method who hold currently valid ASNT NDT Level III certificates will be permitted to transition into the ASNT Central Certification Program without examination.

The level 2's only have to meet snt-tc-1a......level 3's have to meet it and have 3 years exp as a level 3

tncwi ,
Which methods will you be pursuing? What field of weld inspection will you be working? Also notice that TC-1a has a certain amounts of education/experience required to achieve any levels of certification(similar to your CWI). Get a copy of SNT-TC-1a:96 and see what education is required before pursuing the methods you choose.

You have to train under a qualified (min) Level II and the employer will have a training program to give you the experience/education to achieve the Levels of certification. Level I personnel can only work under a Level II or Level III. Usually the employer's written program/policy will spell out the requirements because SNT-TC-1a is only a guide for the employer to establish their written program/policy and it contains the only the minimums that should be included in the program/policy. So the employer could elect to go further than what is recommended by SNT-TC-1a and require more education/experience.

If I can help answer questions about the methods that I am current in, let me know, I would be glad to help.(Level II in UT,MT,PT,and CWI) For UT some trig. math skills will be very helpful in determining sound path and locating indications.

Good Luck with your NTD and congrats on your CWI,
John Wright

Thanks for the response.
We are just getting started and currently do not have a level 2 working with us. So what should I do as far as getting the experience if I must work under a level 2?
I am going to go ahead and order snt-tc-1a:96.

What methods are you looking at to pursue? I'm in Structural steel fabrication and have found UT,MT,PT useful in meeting the requirements of most of our contracts. If RT is required, I sub it out to an Inspection agency that I use nearby.

I went to Krautkramer's school in Lewistown, PA and receive the training for Level I and Level II UT. They offer the class for Level I one week (40hr requirement by SNT-TC-1a) and then the following week you can get the training requirement for Level II (an additional 40hrs). Then all you would need is a job to work under a Level II, or have a Level II oversee your work until you meet the experience requirements to work as a Level II. A Level II can work on his/her own but has to have a Level III to oversee and provide continuing examinations every 3 years to keep certification current. Level III's have exams by other Level III's every 5 years to keep certs current.

I believe that the latest edition of SNT-TC-1A is the 2001 edition. Also you will not be getting very far if your company does not have a Level III. The Level III must approve the company's written practice, train and test the Level I's and Level II's in each of the methods you wish to become certified in. You should obtain A Guide to Personnel Qualification and Certification by George C. Wheeler and the NDT Personnel Training Qualification & Certification - Audit Checklist would also be helpful. Both can be obtained from ASNT, try their website www.asnt.org.

You're right, the latest edition is a "2001" release. I didn't pay attention to the date on that book. Click on the link I provided in an earlier post, it is the latest 2001 version of SNT-TC-1A.
Sorry for the mis-info on that,
Thanks for correcting me, I don't like to give out the wrong info.

That's all I had is the ASNT bookstore link. I've seen it somewhere, but I can't remember what I had for breakfast, so I can't recall where I've seen it online.
Sorry,

Where did you go to HVAC school? I went to Danville Community College for four years and went through their HVAC/refridgeration program.
I never did go to work in that field, I've been here at this company for almost nineteen years where I went and got my CWI and other certs. I've been the QC manager for a number of years and seemed to have found a home, at least for now.

We (our company)had a fabrication plant in Abingdon, Va. (15 miles from Bristol, TN.) and I had to visit on a regular basis. How far are you from Bristol, TN? There are several fabricators in that area that might need a CWI and NDT techs to keep their AISC certs. If it's not too far it might be something to look into.
