Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / 8"pipe in the hangers, 1" from the celling

I had 15-20 butt welds on 8" pipe in a basement. The pipe was 1" from the celling, on all of them. I had leaks on some of the tops, all were on the top. I used 6010 5/32 at 150 amps on the top that cured the problem. Is that what I should of done the first time around? I used a mirror to check but I wasnt picky enough. it bit me in the ass. I think 7018 is too risky on the top because a long arc may cause periosity. I couldn't roll the pipe because 4 inch pipe stuboust were welded to the sides. Any info or tricks on this is greatly appercated... I was on a ladder the whole time.......it's a natural gas line....Im using a buzz box a thermal arc I like it. I dont think its the problem..

I think what I would of done in your case is put my root in on the top from about 11 o'clock to the 1 o'clock position and shine my flashlight thru the gap and check my bead. That's a tough spot you were in, how many times did you smack your helmet into the ceiling?

My hermet only hit the celling once. lol

I usully used a e6010 1/8 at about 90 amps and I start at 11 to 1 o'clock and check it w/the light, then finish the root past and finish it up with e7018 3/32, I work with plumbers all the time welding natural gas pipe on recidential.

I tried that. I used 8th inch 6010 on my root. When I thought I went from 11:00 to 1:00. I checked with my mirror and found out it was 11:00 to 11:30. I had a blind zone about an 1 1/2 inch long. On some of them I discovered this way to late on my cover thats what f$$$ed me. I filled the hole all at once with 5/32 at 150-160 amps. It would of been better if I checked with my mirror and filled it in with each pass. Even at 150 amps it freezes and can cause problems, Part of my problem was that I had cleaning issues. I did the topp with a hand brush. In some cases I had to put it in sideways at an 89 degree angel with 3 only brissles making contact lol You know what Im getting at, it sucked......

I work commercial. All the trades think they shoud go first, it funny. It feels like everyones at a four way stop with everyone tring to go at once lol. I love when the glazers store there glass everywhere uncovered lol. Why are they there anyway theres no drywall up, and there putting in finished product. You have to worry about the iron workers eyeballing your tools. The spinker guys know there F&&&ing me so they bought me food a couple of times. Its that bad.

Long Arc,
I know your environment all too well. The trades are usually left to fend for themselves in commercial building.
Looks like they threw you to the wolves on that 8" line. Sprinkler pipe routes usually get priority but gas pipe welds deserve better consideration than what they gave that line. You would think some prefab could have been done to prevent all 20 welds to be made 1" from the ceiling. Not that the typical mechanical or plumbing contractor cares but the position you were put in probably caused many violations adhering to the WPS and the weld quality definitely suffered because of this. Most likely your only requirement is to pass a pressure test. As a contractor I often was asked to weld out whatever was fit and tacked by the mechanical or plumbing contractors fitters (I use that word generously).

If at all possible I would make the weld uphill root to cap. 6010 1/8" root and flush pass about 90amps. At 12:00 I would weld downhill for a few inches. Then examine the ID and then weld the remainder uphill. The cap can be welded with 7018 1/8" or 3/32". That often depended on where the machine was and what size pipe I was welding. 8" I usually weld with 1/8". At the top I try to run hot and weave slowly and carefully. You can't go far because you have to bend the rod. This is slow and frustrating. Then check with mirror.

If you have a WPS for DH welding you can start at the top and run 6010 or 7010 DH fairly hot and it would be less painful. Welding with mirrors in that position is usually more aggravating than it is worth. Experience with this helps as you can hear and "feel" the weld even though you can't see the puddle. It still isn't easy even if you have lots of experience.

I always carry a straight (die or end) grinder for the spots a side grinder will not reach. You can use a rotary file, stone and wire brush on the grinder.I don't know if that would have even worked for you on the top. Chipping hammer, small file, large file, wire tooth brush (plastic type is flexible) and regular wire brush are all helpful.

There will be difficult and almost impossible welds in your career. The key is knowing how to handle them and also IF they can be welded successfully. Looks like you got it the second time. These hard welds will make you better but don't let them make a habit of abusing you just because you CAN make the welds.

PRAY ALOT!!!  No I hear you on those tight spots.  Im the young guy who gets sent to where ever THEY think I can fit.  You learn how to contourt your body.  Can you lower the hangers any to bring the pipe down or use some chokers and a chain fall and get a couple more inches?

If I had to do it again I would of commicate with the my forman better. Then the hurry aspect would of been gone. That was my fauIt. I got brainwashed into "HURRY" lol. Slowing down would of taken a few more days but its better then moving all your leed down from the fouth flloor.  The forman knows he would of get the 20 questions if he thows me under the bus, he raisied the diffucty. Half of the 8 weld pipe had 4 inch victlic next to it with some occanial PVC. I had to superman over it. We talked were cool sh** happens
