I recommend the Trans-Pacific Tunnel to Alice Springs. It starts in Yucca Flats Nevada! The Government has been building it in secret!

I'm a Tig welder here in Australia. I wouldn't just jump on a plane and come over on the off chance of picking up a job.
We are starting to feel the crunch that the rest of the world has had for the last 6-12 months and are experiencing the same job layoff's that you are experiencing over there.
The general consumer confidence is one of pessimism especially over the next 12 months or so with more and more people out of work.
The big dollar jobs in the mining industry have dried up completely with a collapse of commodity prices and major projects especially in the private sector are either being delayed or cancelled altogether.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but we aren't immune to what is going on around the world either.

Shane can probably speak as knowledgable as anyone about the crunch in Oz. For us American's I know it's also extremely difficult to get a work permit also so don't get your hopes up even if you do find a good gig unless you've checked into the work permit thing or have an employer who will agree to sponsor you. First things first, loads of hurdles to clear!

Yes, work permit....most countries still make you do it legal. In Japan you needed some sort of special skill(speaking English to teach english) to get a work permit from what I learned. But not well versed on the ins and outs though.

Hi all,
The US$12.5 billion Pluto LNG is kicking off in the next couple of months.
The new multi billion CSM (Coal Seam Methane) projects will be kicking off in Galadstone in approx 6 months.
There is still plenty of work in oil and gas (even if no one has any money they still have to drive the car and heat the home) but as Andrew has said the mining projects have dried right up and that means you have got surplus tradesmen chasing the available O&G jobs.
In short, would not recommend a move to Australia at the moment.There are enough locals chasing the work that the rates will invariably go down as everyone fights for the available work.

Shane, have you found another project yet? Don't know if I mentioned it or not but I finally got my NZ residency approved :). Karen and I just bought a home in Christchurch too... will be making the big move sometime later this year.

Hi Jon,
Congratulations on finally getting set up in NZ.
Have got 2 months left in New Caledonia then off to the Pluto LNG project in North Western Australia.
Tried applying all over the world but they only want CSWIP or AWS qualified Welding Inspectors so it looks like I am destined to spend the rest of my career in the South Pacific where my qualifications are recognised,
Will be back in NZ for Xmas with the kids so if there is any chance of catching up let me know.

Trust me Shane, there are far worse places than the South Pacific! :) Yeah, I'll likely be in NZ for Christmas this year since I've spent the last 2 Christmas and New Year's here in Kazakhstan!
