There is still work as of right now but it is slow. hopefully it will pick up when it starts getting warmer
weaver,
I know that alot of the jobs in WI are doled out by temp services. Walworth, Racine and Kenosha cnty's are using some outfit in Delevan, WI. Don't go further south into Lake or Mchenry county Ill. Things are really rough there. I have family members in all those areas and they all work in the steel industry, and are losing hours or getting laid off. My brother in law worked in South Milwaukee and got laid off last week.
I wish You well.
Jeffrey
There seems to be quite a bit of work around Milwaukee and north up by Fon du Lac, Menomonee Falls, and that area. Some around Waukesha too. But like Jeff said before me, alot of it's through employment places. Bucyrus Intl. and P&H Mining were hiring a few weeks ago, they might even still be, but I haven't seen any ads lately. I don't really know much about the Madison area, I'm closer to Milwaukee than Madison, but Fairbanks/Morse in Beloit was looking for 2nd and 3rd shift pipefitters/welders. I got laid off a month ago and have only interviewed once so far, and that was with a staffing agency. According to them, most of their clients aren't looking to really start hiring until the start of the 2nd quarter. Alot of the stuff I see online is for heavy welding, like 1/16" and 3/32" flux-core on heavy plate. All the other fab shops I know of that I've called have all said they're barely keeping the guys they got busy, and that they hope they will be hiring again in spring. John Deere up in Horicon was hiring a month or so ago, and just had an open house with the Madison/Beloit AWS chapter. l think that was last week Friday, but I'm not sure. Oshkosh Truck I think just laid off people in the last month, but I heard that from someone else, and we all know how reliable "that guy" is :).
trukfan,
Things with J.Deere are really rough here in the Moline, (J.Deere's corporate HQ area), and have seen 2200 jobs go out the door in the past 2 months. J.Deere's heavy truck division in Davenport, IA..just across the river from here is pretty much "SOL". most welders have been transfered to other areas..That is if you are one of the lucky ones with union senority. McLaughlin Body Co. which does all cab fabrication for Deere was on a hiring frenzy in just the past month, but now is calling people whom they adminitered weld tests to, to please not continue calling, as they are shutting down the Deere lines and transfering the senior welders to the 2 new DOD vehicle lines they have. The last news I have on the Horicon, WI Deere plant is that there isn't anything going on there. Caterpillar in Peoria, Il laid off just about everybody in the mining truck Div. just last month...the list just goes on and on.
God I hope it gets better, for me and all of You fine folks out there.

There's good work up here in the Fox Cities (Appleton/Oshkosh area), but with everyone getting laid off all over, new job openings are being gobbled up quick.
weaver,
Just thhought I would give You the really easy to navigate Wisconsin job search engine. You'll figure it out pretty quickly. there are many catagories of jobs and I am pretty sure that any real welding is found in the Skilled trades and production sections for each area you are searching.
The site is: www.dwd.state.wi.us/jobnet/
This site is also found on the net as..., www.Wisconsin Jobnet.com
You might want to check out, INDEED.com It's a very thorough search engine and also very simple to navigate.
I really hope this helps you get some solid leads that will allow you to make your move to Wisconsin.
Respectfully, Jeffrey
weaver,
Did a quick search of welding jobs available in Milwaukee. Found only 2! $17-$19 hr. 2nd shift. Fluxcore and MIG. I did find multiple current listings in Waukesha though. 1 listed 3 days ago for Fluxcore welder/fitter @$17-$19hr. #(262)789-0505 It's ATS (employment Service) 40-45 hrs a week in Broofield, WI.

I worked for ATS once in a structral shop for about 2 months in 2006. Pay was good, shop not so much. But that's how most of my temp agency/staffing agency experiences have been. I use the Wisconsin jobnet site quite a bit. Another good one is Milwaukeejobs.com. They give you a list of cities to pick from all over the state, and let you pick the distance you want to travel. Some sites don't give you enough options to narrow your search , but this one does. Also, try putting your resume on Careerbuilder. I know they rarely show more than 2 or 3 jobs for welding on there at any one time, but in the 2+ years I've had my resume on it, I've gotten probably 20 phone calls about jobs, plus quite a few emails.
