That is one ugly rack, but check out the butt on that deer in the third picture!

If I saw either of those in my sights, I'd be too busy crapping my pants to be able to make the shot...

Just curious how big do moose get? Or is photoshop the ticket?
Parent - - By raftergwelding (*****) Date 02-25-2009 20:24
I'm guessing thats a doctored up pic pine trees can get up 50' tall and look at the heightht of the moose comapred to the trees theres no way theres an animal that big but there is the global warming effect going on so i could be wrong still looks really big to me

I think I am going with photoshop. However it could be real. That could be a restricted walk/bike path rather than a road. You have a good point about the trees, but the road was what first caught my eye. Still a very nice looking bull.

I dont know John and Im not arguing cause i never seen a live or even a dead moose andthat thing looks huge and you have met me and know how tall i am i would be doing good to reach the top of the shoulder on that monster
Parent - - By jrw159 (*****) Date 02-25-2009 21:31
LOL, Well they are quite large, but I tend to agree that it is probably photoshopped. Average size for a moose is approx. 6 to 8 feet at the shoulder and approx. 1800 lbs. They are a very impressive animal to say the least. Not something you would want to go after with a boomerang. LOL (Gotcha Bryon!) :-)
Parent - - By BryonLewis (****) Date 02-25-2009 21:32
Damn, I thought you guys forgot about that by now. :-)
Parent - - By jrw159 (*****) Date 02-25-2009 21:34
LOL, all in good fun. :-)
Parent - By raftergwelding (*****) Date 02-25-2009 23:43
I think Bryon could take it out with a boomarang but it would have to be 1 hell of a throw and i doubt it would come back might wanna take 2 ok 3 lol

I think it's not photoshop. Most of those tree's aren't pine trees either in the southern sense. Evergreens yes, but not pines. I think it's a road as well as it exhibit's tire wear paths. The largest recorded kill stood 92" at the shoulder or 7'6". It's not unusual for the ones in the yukon to get to 7'. That road looks more like a fire trail to me as well. They are typically between 6 and 7 feet wide. if you took that wash out beam you see in picture number 2 just under it's hoof, they are normally 8' in length. turn that vertical and it exceeds the heigth of the moose, which again lends credibility to the picture. I'd say it's just under 7' at the shoulder, and given that, the trees in the back ground are probably in high country as well. which in areas north, (canadian yukon) would not be unusual to be stunted.

I may be proven wrong, but I think it's real.

I will buy into that. However, I do think it is a trail rather than a road. Maybe not restricted use, but a trail, IE mostly all terrain vehicle use for the most part. And yes The Alaska/Yukon moose get much larger than the Shiras species. I beleive the approximate sizes I stated are more in tune with the Alaska/Yukon species.

They are all huge animals. And yes, you do not want to wound one, you want to take it with a VERY clean bow shot or a high powered rifle such as 700 mag or 50 cal. black powder.

I'm not thinkin it's photoshop. The only times I saw any moose was when I was workin in Salt Lake and their bellies came up to the hood on my truck and they was on the young side, the bull anyways. When I first saw them I thought they was just big horses on free range but found out different when I got drove by them an they were lookin down at me. They are a really huge animal up close an dangerous to boot if you piss em off!

I have been witness to accidents in WY where the car was low profile and the moose was clipped hard and laid right over into the windshield. The moose had to be put down due to broken legs and both front occupants were killed. I have heard rumor (no first hand knowledge) of the moose walking away.

That is not photoshop IMO.  I have seen many moose.  Somewhere in the thousands.  Remember I live in Maine.  Those trees are mostly fir with a couple spruce if my eyes serve me correctly.  If I had to take a guess that moose would be between 800 and 1000lbs dressed.  I have never seen an alaskan moose they are bigger but I have seen moose that dressed out at over 1200lbs.

It's not photoshoped, it's just the way the picture was taken and where.  The trail is probably a 4 wheeler trail and the trees are not that big.  It's one of those optical illusion shots. ;-)  The pic was taken in Macadam, Canada, just across the border from Vanceboro, Maine.
Here's another big one for ya guys.  It was taken in Alaska.  http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a189/vdubin474/Monstermoose.jpg

I'd shoot the bear alright, but I'd give it away instead of putting it in my freezer.  Moose meat is really good but the bear meat I've had tasted like rancid grease smells.

You must have gotten a hold of some exceptionally good bear. I would not have given it such a rave review. But thanks for reminding me, I'm going to thaw out some alfalfa feed moose for tomorrow.
